Tips for G Suite: Students Using the Explore Tool in Google Sheets to Analyze Data

This year G Suite has expanded the capabilities of the Explore tool in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. In Google Sheets, this feature is particularly powerful to help students understand how to analyze data. Let's take a closer look using an example spreadsheet.

This spreadsheet contains the results of a learner survey. Notice the "Explore" tool is in the lower right corner.

When I click on the Explore tool, I see options for asking questions, formatting, and analyzing the data:

Under the answers section, students can type in questions about their data. Notice there are suggested questions underneath the search bar to help students understand the format. How could you use this to help your students write good questions?

The analysis section has pre-populated charts that you can insert into the spreadsheet and modify. This is a wonderful starting point for your students to practice manipulating data and identifying trends.

All content in the Explore tool is customized for your data set. If you open the Explore tool on a different spreadsheet, you will see different suggestions based on the types of data in your spreadsheet. You could give your students a quantitative and a qualitative example spreadsheet and have them compare the differences in data. Even better, have your students create a Google Form to collect the data and then have them analyze it.

I hope this gives you some ideas to help your students analyze data using the Explore tool in Google Sheets!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
