Sample Getting to Know You Pathway

Below is a pathway for beginning of year "getting to know the students", used in a 7th grade ELA class.  Notice a few important components:

1.)  This particular pathway uses a relevant topic (getting to know students) to still address grade level standards.

2.)  Content standards are written in student-friendly language on the left side.

3.)  Pathway options are aligned with each content standard.

4.)  Checkpoints (with the teacher) are required throughout the process to ensure for both the students and the teacher that student progress is productive and on the right "path" (pun unintended).

5.)  Opportunities for learning not only include practice, but also require students to explain their thinking and processes, taking learning to a much deeper level than practice alone.
