Earlier this year, Google Sites was updated to be much more user friendly with drag and drop based editing from your Google Drive. However it was missing one major feature- the ability to embed content from other websites.
Thankfully, this past week, Google Sites was updated with a new "Embed URL" tool. For those of you wondering what language I am writing...you can now include custom content from your favorite educational tools and websites in your Google Site.
Let's look at one example of how this could work:
I'm getting ready to teach my students about the water cycle...I have created a sub-page on my Google Site to add resources for parents and students. I have inserted a diagram and a video tutorial. I would like to include two current event news articles to drive home the relevance of understanding the water cycle and its impacts on our environment.
I opened my Google Site and look for the "Embed URL" tool under the "Insert" menu:
Once I clicked on the "Embed URL" tool, I copied and pasted the URL of the news article into the pop-up box and clicked the blue "Add" button:
I repeated this process for the second article.
Here is a look at my live site now with the embedded content:
My Google Site is now ready to be published and shared with students and parents. If you would like to view this example site, please click here.
Please note that not all websites are able to be embedded into a Google Site. If you try this process and it just displays a link, it is because the web host has disabled embedding and Google cannot embed the site.
If you are new to Google Sites, here is a great tutorial to help you get started.
