What is Personalized Learning?
What is this "Personalized Learning" we keep hearing about?
How is it any different from Differentiation?
Are these terms not interchangeable?
Can we not call it all Individualization and pretend we're already doing it?
As it turns out, the answers to these questions can be clarified with the following graphic, from Barbara Bray & Kathleen McClaskey.

See the differences?
- Personalization starts with the learner. The other starts with the teacher.
- With personalization, the learner (with the facilitation of the teacher) determines their personal objectives, then their steps to achieve their objectives. With the other two, the teacher determines those things for the students.
- Personalization creates independent learners, while with the other two, students are dependent upon the teacher.
- With personalized learning, learners assess their learning as they go and as their learning (yes, that was the correct form of "their" there).
Hmm... Okay. That's helpful, but I need to talk this out. Can I share this with others?
Absolutely! Forward this to others, tweet it, and/or print it out and discuss at your next PLC. We absolutely encourage you to share it, discuss it, and use it to clarify your initial perceptions and thinking regarding personalized learning.
