Formative Culture: #informlearning

Check back here for ideas on how to easily and efficiently inform instruction by formatively assessing student mastery throughout the learning process.

#informlearning

Being student driven and data informed is so much better than being data driven (insert thinking emoji here). The concept of formative assessment is nothing new in the world of education, but many Johnston County Public School educators are rethinking the concept, and making the term a verb, rather than a noun.

This summer, JCPS hosted a series of professional development called EQuiP (Everyday Quality Instructional Practices). Many K-12 educators traveled the road to Student Driven (IN)formative Assessment, exploring ways to ensure students know where they are, where they are going, and how they are going to get there. Along the way, teachers...
  • discovered new skills for building relationships through formative assessment,
  • used those skills to tap into students’ attitudes and aspirations,
  • explored the barriers to creating a culture of formative assessment in their classrooms, and...
  • found enablers to creating a culture of formative assessment that put the thinking work back on the students.

A menu of tools and techniques generated a level of excitement toward taking risks and trying new things and the rebellers of assessment really stepped out of the box to explore innovative ways to formatively assess outside of the comfort zone.
